Ever since I was old enough to be aware of my surroundings I admired people who used planners. People who had enough going on in their life that required them to write things down always seemed to live such full rich lives.
Every so often I would insist on purchasing a planner. They varied from the classic five star fat book planners with a zip cover to the simple free pocket size you get from your local bank. No matter how much enthusiasm I had about each planner, I would forget to use it. My life had little change or event to necessitate writing something down.
Some planners make no sense to me, they are the kind you have to fill in the date yourself. No matter how much care I put into making sure my markings were accurate, without fail I would make a mistake and completely throw of the dates.
The change came when I served a mission. There is no way for a missionary to keep track of all their appointments, addresses, names dates etc. without a planner. The standard missionary planners require you to fill in the dates, but thankfully I had a companion to work with me on this so I could keep it straight. Go teamwork!
When I returned from my mission in March of 2008, what do you think was one of the first things on my to do list? Buy a planner. This was shocking to me! Not only was it a priority, but I was really excited about getting one!
I remember going to Walmart and perusing the planner aisle like a child deciding what type of candy to choose. I settled on a sensible pocket-size weekly planner with lovely plastic faux leather cover. What added to its appeal was its gold leafed edged pages. It was quite sophisticated.
Year number 2 of my planner shopping found me a delightful black pocket-size from the dollar aisle at Target. It was an excellent planner at an unbeatable price. It served me well.
Normally I have my planners armed and ready to take the place of their predecessors, however January 1, 2010 found me in a foreign land, sunny California, and threw me off my planner buying groove. It wasn't until days after I returned that I finally stole some time to pursue my yearly planner search.
My first stop was a dollar store. I found a perfect planner for my mother's piano teaching scheduling, but nothing suited my purposes. And so the search continued...
On to a local grocery store. Nothing! I know, I was not looking in the places a planner would certainly be found, but I was trying to give the other venues a chance.
My final destination found me at Target. I'd has success last year in the dollar aisle and had high hopes of a second victory, but it was not to be. And so I ventured down to the planner aisle and began my intense search.
Too big, too small, too boring, too wild, too expensive, too fancy, too plain, not enough info, too much info... wait for it, wait for it.... one in each hand, one black, one teal. The black has the monthly calendars listed with the days of the week, but the teal has beauty and style and is pleasing to the eye.... The teal DOES have the former and next month listed on the monthly calendar page... something to consider. Who is the winner? Drum roll if you please:
