A morning in the life of Catie

5:15am The alarm sounds as I groggily peek out from under my eyelids... ready to get up? Almost.... SNOOZE.
5:24am No more time for sleeping, time to get up.

5:26am I roll onto my knees to pray then get up and make my bed
5:30am Look in the mirror and try not to gasp at the sight (I have to remind myself that I have been unconscious for several hours, so my looks are forgivable)
5:35am Time to change into my exercise attire
5:40am I make my way down the hall to take on the run for the day.
6:25am Finally it is time for me to swipe the controller violently to the left to turn off the treadmill
6:30am Shower, get dressed, hair, make-up, smile
7:00am Breakfast
7:15am Out the door to work.

My mornings have become somewhat of a dreary routine. My goal for 2011 is to get up earlier so I can incorporate my scripture study into the morning rather than waiting until bedtime. So this is my official declaration,
I will change my ways!
I will not press "snooze"!
I will start my day off with meaningful scripture study!

One of my goals for 2011 is to establish and abide by a personal mission statement. Thanks to a fabulous website... http://www.franklincovey.com/msb/ I have established just such a statement. I will share it with you below so that if you ever find me failing to live up to my mission statement, you can correct me.

Happy Boxing Day

First I just want to express that I had one of the best Christmas's I've had in a long time. It was small, but just right. I loved spending time with my parents. I was a bit skeptical of a Christmas morning with just the three of us, but it was very joyous and happy. I loved watching my parents exchange gifts for each other. I love the relationship they have. It is something I wish for one day in my own life.
The highlight of Christmas day was having a video conference with Elder Findlay in Scotland. That was the best Christmas present I could ever ask for. Seeing his face and his smile was priceless.

I was humbled by the many gifts I received. My parents are far too good to me. I will forever be in their debt.

Another update, I officially switched majors. I am now studying accounting. My first semester in Pre-Business begins in January. I'm a bit nervous about dusting off my math skills, but with dedication and hard work I know I can do anything.

Alec

...lazy boy, remote control, fuzzy blanket (just in case)...what more could a little boy want?

Lydia Leonora Clio Findlay

On Wednesday October 20, 2010 the 17th grandchild was born into my family. Justin and Karen are now the parents to a beautiful new baby girl. She is so precious. I can already tell she has a spunky personality. What is it about holding newborns that is so spiritual? They're so close to our Heavenly Father. She is starting out in this life so perfectly. She has wonderful parents who will teach her to use her mind and imagination. I'm so lucky to be her aunt, and the first aunt to hold her at that! Welcome to the family Lydia!

Wasatch Woman Love Your Body 6K

Today I had the opportunity to run my last race of the season. It was a 6K at Thanksgiving Point. I had Rachel sign up with me several months ago. I know how important it is to always have a race ahead of me that was paid for, so this one kept me running all summer. Rachel did awesome! She sailed ahead of me and finished strong. She's running the Las Vegas Ragnar in two weeks, so its a good opportunity for her to get some race experience. My time was right where I wanted it to be. I ran an 8 min. Kilometer. So I finished in just over 48 min. I was pleased. I passed several people along the way, which wasn't hard to do considering there were over 1800 women in this race. Statistically there were bound to be people slower than me. Due to the large numbers, we never really got to spread out, so the route got a little crowded at times. Nevertheless, it was a fabulous race and a great experience. I may look it up for next year. And so now I take this time to wish my lovely new co-worker luck on her Ragnar Relay! Go Rachel!!

A New Era

Last week I found out some good news and some bad news. The good news is that Colby, my co-worker got a new job! The bad news, he's leaving me. More good news! His replacement is my good friend Rachel. I am so excited to have her work with me! Welcome to the office Rachel! Its gonna be awesome!

Back to School

This fall has brought about many challenges. The most expensive of which being a full-time student at the Univeristy of Utah. With the addition of classes laid on top of my responsibilities as a Relief Society President and employment at Jordan Credit Union, life has gotten busy.
My salvation of course has been my time spent with Josh. He is so supportive and does all he can to help me. I am so thankful for him.
Going back to school has been a kind of rude awakening. My previous college situation was at a smaller school and under more wholesome circumstances. Small and wholesome are not exactly my first word choices for the UofU. However, I seem to be adjusting fairly well. My classes require extensive reading and critical thinking. With all this thinking my brain is getting quite the workout.
And so as week 3 of the semester is winding down, I just wanted to take a few moments to let you all know that I am still alive and I think I will make it.
Slow, sure and steady.

Saturday DYI Project

Today was spent in Farmington helping my wonderful brother James and his wife Erin put on some finishing touches in their kitchen. Home improvement projects never seem to quite be finished...but today we were able to make some significant contributions. I am the expert with the miter saw and my mom is the expert painter. Together we are unstoppable! Here are a few before and afters of the project.

Just had to tell someone!

As you can see by an earlier post, I have been working quite hard on getting healthy and losing weight. Well, I wanted to report that as of this morning's weigh in, I have lost 23 lbs!!! And there is no stopping me! I feel great and every bit of clothing that is now too big is a victory!

My other exciting news is that I am dating the most amazing person in the world! His name is Josh Baer and I cannot wait to see what the future holds!

Brigham City Temple Groundbreaking

Saturday July 31st I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Brigham City Utah for the groundbreaking of the new temple. It was such a neat experience to participate. President Boyd K. Packer was the presiding authority. He spoke along with Elder Nelson and a few other local leaders. Its so exciting to have another Utah temple! I look forward to attending a session there one day. It was wonderful to be with such good friends from my ward. I was able to make a couple new friends as well. Life couldn't be better when you are in the midst of so many good people.

And it wouldn't be a trip to Brigham City without stopping to visit my brother and his wonderful family. Here is a picture of me with my nephew Alec. He's such a handsome kid.

A New Resolve

Before I left on my mission I had worked very hard to be healthy. I intended to maintain a healthy lifestyle on my mission, but lets face it, when you're out there, you are subject to circumstances that at times you cannot control. And so I gained weight. Since I have been home I have been working on re-establishing healthy habits. Last November I started running, which has been the best thing ever. And so I will post a current photo as well as one from the last few weeks of my mission. I still have a long journey ahead of me, but progress is being made.

Seattle 2010

This year I decided to take my aunt and uncle in Seattle up on an invite to come stay with them. It was a very good choice. They were the perfect hosts and I had a fantastic time. This first picture above shows me at the Seattle Temple. The statue reminded me of a young dating couple dreaming of a temple marriage.
My uncle Scott works for The Boy Scouts of America. So the second day of my aunt, cousin and I drove to Camp Parsons, located on the Puget Sound across the way. We took a ferry ride and crossed  floating bridge to get there. It was such a beautiful drive. The photo above was taken in the camp museum.
The view of the dock at Camp Parsons
This is the lighthouse in Mukilteo. Lighthouses are always so fun to visit. In my eyes they are a perfect analogy of the light of the gospel.
On the beach in Mukilteo
Black Licorice Ice Cream. Oh so yummy!
Mount St. Helens. Imagine another 1600 feet of elevation on top of this mountain and a perfect peak. That is what blasted off in 1980.
Super cute Cafe where DeAnne and I had lunch after our drive to Mount St. Helens. The food was amazing and the service was top notch.
Lunch in Seattle. A fun hole-in-the-wall Italian Restaurant. The water for the table came in a snazzy blue bottle.
The Underground Tour of Seattle. It was so fascinating to learn about the history of the city.
The famous "Gum Wall". Doesn't it look tasty? or Minty perhaps?
And what would a trip to Seattle be without a stop at Pikes Place Market? I am glad I went, but I shall remind myself never to go again on a busy Saturday afternoon. The craziest thing we saw was a couple getting married on the side of the road. How romantic? Not my ideal, but hey, to each their own.

So all in all it was an amazing trip. Scott, DeAnne and Katie made me feel right at home. I could not have asked for a more enjoyable vacation.

There were never such devoted sisters...

As most of you know, I am the only girl in a family of boys. June 1999 that changed and I could not be happier with the acquisition.
I have the best sister-in-laws a person could ask for. They are all practically perfect in every way. Each on adds a beautiful cacophony of personality, pizzaz and sheer beauty to my family.

Misa was the first to come into my family. She is a vastly talented musician with gorgeous red hair. She is so pure and kind. She is the perfect match for John.

Erin came in at a close second, joining my family the same summer as Misa. Erin is such a strong individual. She inspires me to be my own person and not be afraid of what anyone thinks. And can I just say she has the most beautiful smile! People often mistake her for my blood sister, that is the best compliment I could ever receive!

Less than a year after the wedding of James and Erin came Michelle to Jason. Michelle was closest to my age and it was just like having the big sister I never had. She invited me to go wedding dress shopping with her which was such a delight. Michelle knows how to find happiness in any situation. With six children, you have to look at the bright side to keep yourself from going crazy.

About a year after wedding number 3 came sister-in-law number 4, Leslie. Wow! What an amazing individual! She is the perfect match for Jacob. Her talents and abilities seem limitless. I love watching her with her children. She is such a good mom. I hope I can emulate at least some of her skills when I become a mother someday.

It was a long time between weddings for sister-in-law number 5, but she was worth the wait. Karen married Justin in May of 2009. She has such a positive energy about her. She makes Justin glow with happiness. I am so grateful for her friendship. She gives me a whole new perspective on life.

With my five older siblings married off, I can't deny I hope the next addition to the Findlay family is a brother-in-law for my brothers. However, I shall be patient and trust in the Lord's timing. He has already blessed me more than I could have ever imagined with these righteous beautiful women. I could not have hand picked them better myself.

A Tribute to my Dad

Don Findlay was born August 30, 1952. He married Catherine, August 28, 1974. After 5 boys they had me, child number six, a daughter. I came into a wonderful family with the best dad in the world. Let me tell you a little bit about this wonderful man.
My Dad is a music teacher. This career has had a great impact on my family. His passion and love for music has penetrated to his children in a very positive way. All of his children play a musical instrument and married people who are also musically gifted.
My Dad raised me on good music. Classical 89 was the standard station preset in every vehicle. We learned to appreciate the beauty of music.
My Dad also has a great sense of adventure. Some of my greatest childhood memories are of trips to explore places we'd never been before. We would all pile into the big blue van and go exploring. We often seemed to end up on treacherous mountain roads with a rock face on one side and a steep cliff off to the other side. Was I nervous? Yes, but I trusted that my Dad would get us home safely. And he always did.
My Dad has a great sense of humor. I love his laugh. He is also quite ticklish which is a trait my Mom loves to take advantage of whenever he's having a bad day and needs to smile. In fact, that is the case with ALL the male Findlays. Well...with me as well.
My Dad has a very deep and abiding testimony of the Savior and his gospel. He is an avid student of the scriptures. He studies them every day. I appreciate his efforts to have our family read scriptures and pray together every morning. I tend to grumble sometimes, but I really do appreciate it. It makes my day go better when started with these devotionals.
My Dad is a very hard worker. He always has to be doing something. I will forever be grateful for the sacrifices he made for our family. The most notable being that he has always worked two jobs so that my Mother could stay home with the family. I feel extremely blessed to have been raised in such conditions.
My Dad makes me feel like a princess. He often compliments me and expresses his love to me. He is a perfect gentleman, never hesitating to open my door. I have come to expect a lot from my future spouse because of the wonderful example of my Dad. I want my children to have a Dad just as amazing as mine. Happy Father's Day Dad! I love you!

Cherished Moments

Wednesday evening began by a visit to Mary Clifford. We had planned to do some work on her computer, but our plans changed a bit. Before anything else she invited me to have some dinner. Her husband is my bishop. So I sat with Bishop Clifford and enjoyed some meatloaf (which he made). We had a wonderful visit and I gained some important insight from him in regards to some decisions I am making in my life. Bishop Clifford is being released on June 27th and I will be very sad to see him go. But as the church presses on I look forward to meeting my new bishop.
After dinner Mary asked me if I would be interested in accompanying her to visit her father at the care center where he lives. I was honored to have such an invitation. You see, Mary Clifford's father is Marion D. Hanks, an emeritus General Authority. The spirit in the room was so strong. It was such a wonderful blessing to be able to meet him. We sang hymns and visited briefly. It was an experience I shall never forget. I feel so honored to know Mary. She is such a blessing to me. She gives me strength and inspires me to be good.
(just a little background: Marion D. Hanks was a mission president in England, two of his missionaries were Elder Jeffrey R. Holland and Quentin L. Cook ALSO: Blair Ford, my brother's father-in-law!)

Disclaimer: This is the longest post on record, but it speaks real life

Diary of a Dater
If at first you don't succeed, try try again...

Situation #1 Missionary Moment

Boy meets girl at a post missionary gathering. Smiles are exchanged across the way. They eventually find each other on Facebook, that ever increasing tool of social networking. Chats ensue and the boy gets the girl's number and a date.

Date #1 – Dinner
Chicago style hot dogs. What a charmer. He knew a way to find connections. They both served in the Illinois Chicago South Mission. Delightful conversation, though somewhat timid, occurred. Each found pleasure in the other's company. It ended with a doorstep hug and a goodbye.

Date #2 – Dinner + Movie
A few days later, feeling impressed that things went well enough for another go-round, the girl calls the boy and encourages a second date. He invites her to dinner plus a movie. (The dates are now extending a bit, good sign right?)
He picks her up for dinner. The restaurant is a bit more upscale. Their table is outside on the terrace. Following the meal, they drive to Jordan Commons and peruse the current playlist of movies. His first suggestion shocks the poor innocent girl, an R-rated movie. She quickly declines and suggests an alternative. A somewhat interesting, but one timer movie called “500 Days of Summer”.
After the movie, on the way out to the car, the boy asks the girl if she has ever been in a serious relationship. What does one say to a forward question such as this? She shyly responds that she has not. He then proceeds to explain to her that he has and that the girl he desired was getting married that very weekend. The girl tried to show sympathy and support, though in the back of her mind she was wondering why he would share such things on a second date.
Before the couple even exited the parking lot, he turned to her and began “the talk”. He began by expressing to her how pretty she was and what a wonderful person she is. Then he began to compare their relationship to the one in the movie they had just seen. Basically that even though they could be really great friends, they are not meant to be together in a romantic sense.
The entire rest of the way to the girls house the boy apologized again and again that things couldn't work out between them. She tried her best to console him and assure him that all would be well. Two dates was not enough to damage her heart. This date also ended with a doorstep hug.

Date #3 – Dinner
Why? Your guess is as good as hers. A month or so following date #2, the boy contacts her via Facebook, yet again, and invites her to dinner. He picks her up and takes her for sushi. They enjoy more good conversation, but the entire evening the girl is baffled as to why the boy asked her out on another date. On the drive back to the girl's house, he again reiterates that she is a pretty girl and a wonderful person, and apologizes that they cannot be more for each other.

Where are they now?
Two more encounters have taken place, simple friendly get-togethers. They are on good terms and are still great friends. The girl takes comfort in that she feels they could never get together anyway because of his choice in movies. And so their relationship is purely plutonic.

Situation #2 Flirting with Disaster

Boy meets girl at a stake speed dating fhe activity. The chemistry is good. Both parties seem genuinely interested and eager to get to know the other better. The girl learns that the boy is in her student single's ward and teaches gospel doctrine. She expresses an interest in attending his upcoming lesson which would take place two weeks from that time. On the appointed Sunday she discovered she would be unable to attend his lesson due to another commitment. Feeling like she ought to let him know, she looked up his phone number in the ward directory and called him. There was no answer so she left a message explaining why she would not be attending his lesson.
Later that same afternoon the boy calls back and asks her out on a date.

Date #1 – Institute + Dinner
The only time the girl had available for the date was on the evening she attended institute. Rather than meeting up after her class, they decided to attend together. She met the boy at his house and he drove them to the class. Afterwards he took her to Leatherby's for dinner and ice cream. They had wonderful conversation and learned much about each other.
On the way home she mentioned she would be attending the temple a couple days later early in the morning. He expressed interest in joining her there, so she offered for him to go along.

Date #2 – Temple + Breakfast
Two days after the first date, the girl drove to the boy's house to pick him up in the wee small hours of the morning. They attended a session at the Jordan River Temple then he treated her to breakfast. She drove him home and rushed to get back to work. It was a good way to begin her morning.

Date #3 – Movie
Throughout the week following the first date, which took place on a Tuesday, text messages were sent back and forth which seemed to express an interest beyond just a couple dates. Eventually the boy asked her for a third date for Saturday evening. A movie. He picked her up and took her to see “The Princess and the Frog”. She had mentioned earlier in the week that she had an interest in seeing it. He remembered.

Date #4 – Concert and Troubled Waters
The girl has connections to the Orchestra at temple square. She had tickets for their upcoming concert, so she invited the boy to go with her the Saturday following date #4. During the week prior, Tuesday evening to be exact, she received a text message that disturbed her greatly. He told her that he had forgotten his phone that day and that night he had taken his best friend's wife out to dinner. Yes. Wife.
The content of this message troubled her greatly. She thought about calling the boy to inquire further into the situation. She attempted it once, but there was no answer. So she waited until the appointed date. They met on Temple Square and made their way to the Tabernacle. The girl was very quiet and reserved agonizing over what she was going to say. The boy, as boys can be, was completely oblivious to the situation.
The girl inquired about the wife of the boy's best friend, seeking details. This only caused more frustration due to the total lack of propriety in the situation. Nothing more was said of the situation until they pulled in to the girl's driveway. They got out of the car, she turned to the boy and simply stated her stance that she was not okay with the situation involving this married couple. The boy gave no explanation other than that he is really great friends with the married couple. The girl raised her hands in an exasperated sigh of frustration and said goodnight.

Where are they now?
The girl has yet to attend a gospel doctrine class taught by this boy. He is still in her ward and will attempt conversation on occasion. She will politely respond, but not prolong the encounter.

Situation #3 To Be or Not To Be?

Girl sees boy at ward choir practice shortly after he joins the ward. She sees him again at a ward activity, a BYU vs. UofU Rugby game. They sit together. Girl sees boy at ward prayer and goes to sit by him. They talk about everything from their missions to family to their favorite kind of dessert. He likes lemon bars. At the end of the evening the boy gets the girl's phone number.

Date #1 – Concert + Ice Cream
The girl gave her phone number on a Sunday evening. An entire week went by with no word, then she spotted him at fhe. She smiled encouragingly. He called her later that evening and invited her to join him for a date to go see a group called the Eagleland Chorus. A barbershop choir.
He picked her up Saturday evening in his mother's brand new car. A beautiful Nissan Altima. He was a perfect gentleman. He opened her doors and was totally respectful at all times. They enjoyed the concert and he took her for ice cream at Leatherby's. (that restaurant has had some drama).
He takes her home at the end of the evening, escorts her to her front door and gives her a hug and a goodnight.

Date #2 – Copper Mine + Park
Things went well on the first date, so the next week the girl called the boy and invited him to go with her to the Kennecott Copper Mine.
The girl picked him up at the appointed time and they drove up the canyon. The weather was rather disagreeable, but they had fun anyway. When the museum curator began shutting things down, they drove down the canyon and over to Copperton Park for dessert. She made his favorite, lemon bars. They ate their treats then had fun playing on the playground at the park. He expressed an interest in board and card games and inquired if she liked them as well. She said that she did. So they eventually went back to the boys house and played a couple of board games. When the second was finished she excused herself. He gave her a hug and she went home.

Date #3 – Fireside
Two days after date #2 the boy and girl had stake conference on temple square. She spotted him when she arrived and navigated her friends over to sit by him. An announcement was made for a stake fireside that was to be held that evening. Trying to be clever, the girl turned to the boy and told him that she had not yet had the privilege of riding in his car (remember, before he took his mom's car) and if he was going to the fireside would he be willing to take her along. Mission accomplished. He picked her up that evening and they attended the fireside at the Taylorsville Institute.
Afterwards as they were enjoying refreshments the boy asked the girl if she'd like to go out again that Saturday. She said yes which brings us to date #4.

Date #4 – Picnic + Mini-Golf
The original idea for this date was a group activity. The morning of the date, the other boy got sick, so it was just going to be the original boy and girl. The boy picked her up quite later than he had said, but she was forgiving. He took her to Daybreak Lake for a picnic lunch. They ate lunch and played frisbee. Later he took her to play mini-golf. He won though she did score a hole in one. He took her home and as usual gave her a doorstep hug and a goodbye.

Where are they now?
This particular situation would seem to have continued well right? Wrong. The day after date #4 the two find themselves once again at ward prayer. Near the end of the event, the boy asks the girl if she'd like to go for a walk. She says yes and he leads her outside for a walk. As they began down the sidewalk, he slipped his hand in hers and they walked hand in hand in a loop around the neighborhood. At the conclusion of the walk, he escorted her to her car, gave her a hug and they planned to attend institute that Tuesday.
Tuesday evening when the boy picked up the girl, they no sooner had buckled their seat belts when he said he needed to talk to her. He said he had been thinking a lot about everything that had happened since the last time he'd seen her and he felt it would be better if they were just friends. What was the reaction of the girl? Shock. Pure and simple shock. He offered for them to still attend institute but she declined. (not only for the fact that she needed to get away and breath, but the only class offered at the time they could attend was “Happiness in Dating”...)
And so the girl got out of the car, he insisted on giving her one last hug and she went back into the house.

Situation #3 ½ The date that never was...
Girl attends stake fhe BBQ with her friends. She hopes to see boy from situation #3, but find out through text message that he would not be attending. In an effort to expand herself and get to know more people, she breaks away from the group. She found herself sitting alone on a picnic bench. Before long a charming young man sat down next to her and initiated conversation. He asked her name, what she does, hobbies, interests etc. She also inquired the same of him. He invited her to go on a date with him that week. He got her number and told her he would call her the night before to confirm the details. On the night of the anticipated phone call the girl waited and waited and waited. Nothing. She finally sent him a text message inquiring if the date was still on. This is the message she received: “I'm sorry about not letting you know sooner but I have been thinking I am interested in this other girl this week that I have been out a few times with and I don't think going out with someone else is the best thing for me right now.” Shock. Utter and complete shock was the reaction of the girl. Who does this?

Thank you for plowing through. I hope you found some joy and entertainment in delving into my life experiences of late...

Dear Stake BBQ Boy:

It was such a pleasure meeting you this week at our annual stake bbq activity. What added more to my delight was the prospect of a date this week with you at your request. I waited with great anticipation for the phone call Wednesday evening to confirm the plans for the Thursday evening date, for which you suggested.
You can imagine my dismay when Wednesday evening drew into late evening and bedtime without hearing a word. I sent you a text message to make sure you were okay and that you had my correct number.
The message I received was not anything that I would have expected. You said you decided you were interested in someone else and didn't think it was a good idea to go out with me. I find it odd that this decision happened so quickly, but I suppose you have your reasons.
I wish you well in your future dating endeavors.

Sincerely,
BBQ Girl

A Tribute to Alison Part II

This weekend my dear friend Alison Lord tied the knot and became Alison Harris. She was radiant. I have never seen a more happy couple. I am sad that she will not be in my ward anymore, however, I am excited that she will be living closer to me. This morning she left for her glorious honeymoon in Mexico. Steve is one lucky man. He's very good for her. I couldn't be more pleased.
